Ask For

I felt anticipation for the fear I couldn't see.
I painted in the future on the darkness over me.
And I thought the world would be a wonderful place.
But the virtue I beheld has been erased.

All I wanted is love but I'm bound to this lust.
We never get what we ask for. (Not yet.)
I need a friend I can trust? (Not yet.)
Did I desire too much?
When will we find ourselves?

I'd defend the flames of wisdom who plead the paradox.
They were fighting for a peace a freedom life won't mock.
So I thought truth was something you could explain,
But the signals just get crossed through this pain.

It must be a test, we need more than this.
We never get what we ask for. (Not yet.)
We want proof to exist.
We never get what we ask for. (Not yet.)
But we'll run from the risk.
When will we find ourselves?

And what is this knowledge we need when we're blinded?
It's a cruel mystery if mercy denies us.
There's beauty in weakness and faith on these mean streets.
Lead us home.

We're chewing the bait but we still got to wait.
We never get what we ask for. (Not yet.)
The rules are strange.
We never get what we ask for. (Not yet.)
There's pain in fate.
When will we find ourselves?
