Self Portrait
It's so easy to judge behind the disguise of a lit cigarette aglow
I say "This ain't my scene" wherever I go
But I hardly know myself so how would I know?
And I may seem cool but I'm fallin' apart
A starving artist with a food stamp card
Clamoring for affection
Desperate for attention
Trying to force some sort of connection
But I'm trying to get better with every endeavor
Spend a little less effort on being clever
And a little more time being kind
I'll question myself till I make up my mind
There's a poetry tome next to my bed
That I've never read, it's where I stash my rent
I'm a college drop out who never mediates
Claiming to teach you the way
When we changed our tune I asked Bran what he thought
He grabbed me by the shoulders and said that I've got
An obligation to fufill
Given my privilege and skill
To set my intention and direct my will
He said: We don't have the ammo to fight off the cops
No power to stop these corporate plots
Apocalyptic warnings they just won't stop
Our strongest weapon is to create beauty with all that we've got
It's all that we've got
So, keep that in mind
Rock N Roll will never die!
Once my lover sang me a song
From the mountain top, my very favorite one
And I couldn't even cry
I've told so many people a lie
When I told them I'd love them forever
I value my friends over everything else
But then I'm not there when they need my help
I'm a "Nice Guy"
But I just don't have the time
And I've got so many friends
And I'm spreading myself thin
Keep busy with the common wealth
So I don't have to work on myself
So I put on my mask
And I skip town
But a fire inside
Is burnin' me down
When you bury my bones, what stories will you tell?
Will the glow go unnoticed when I'm raisin' hell?
Whatever grows from my grave don't let it dwell
Just dig yourself a garden and guard it well
I say "This ain't my scene" wherever I go
But I hardly know myself so how would I know?
And I may seem cool but I'm fallin' apart
A starving artist with a food stamp card
Clamoring for affection
Desperate for attention
Trying to force some sort of connection
But I'm trying to get better with every endeavor
