Crowbar

How did we survive this year?
When I close my eyes and look back
All I see is a starless sky on election night
I see a wax man in a wax crown
On a wax throne in a very old, stone building

The building is full of very old, stone people
Making very old, stone decisions

I try not to close my eyes
I try to keep my eyes on the road
And remember to look up sometimes
Remember to look up sometimes

But it's hard
It's hard when you're asleep
It's hard to open your eyes when you're asleep

Open your eyes
Open your eyes
Open your eyes

How did we survive this year?
Did you flick that switch in your head?
Did you switch it on or off?
Or did you take a crowbar to the breaker box
And open your eyes?

Open your eyes
Open your eyes
Open your eyes
Open your eyes

Now, when I close my eyes
I see a riot and a sleeping bag
I see a blizzard and a wood stove
I see a fire-pit

And I feel a hand on the back of my head
I feel a hand on the back of my head

I try not to close my eyes
