I'm Good, Of Course

The other day I was doing just fine
Ran some errands at the Superstore
And walked to the checkout line
Was greeted by a sweet old lady
Who looked me in the eye
And said
"How are you?"

I hesitated for some reason
I'm not really sure why
But then I smiled and looked at her
And of course, my reply was

I'm good
What else would I be?
I mean maybe I'm okay
But maybe I just don't want them to see
Any of the pain that I have felt recently
Or get a glimpse of all my faults
That I have hidden oh so expertly

Yesterday I was doing alright
Went to a shnazzy party
And was having a real good time
Was greeted by a friend I had not seen
In a little while
He said
"How's it going dude?"

I hesitated for some reason
I'm not really sure why
But then I smiled and looked at him
And of course, my reply was

I'm good
What else would I be?
I mean maybe I'm okay
But maybe I just don't want them to see
Any of the pain that I have felt recently
Or get a glimpse of all my faults
That I have hidden oh so expertly

You know it's funny how we think that we should hide who we are
When all around us every person has their own set of scars
Maybe I should start to see how we were all created equally
And put my past behind me so my shame doesn't get the best of me
