The River & the Gum

Just a wayfarer drifting in the wind
So young and wild and fancy free
This red soil is where his life begins
And some would say it was meant to be
Born here on the dry river banks
Never seen a drop of rain
When the season brought a summer storm
He'd never been so afraid

Her water rushed around his feet
In a moment she was there
She shook the wind out of his boughs
She was ravishing and rare
So brave and yet so unaware
How her banks would break and bend
To feed the dry and barren soil
Until the drought would end

Oh the river and the gum
O'vr years have become one
His roots run deep into her soil
Her water feeds his troubles and toil
There is no greater love
Under starry skies above
Forever they will bend and run
The river and the gum

Over years the rain had come and gone
Until she was so small
The dust rose up with the sun
Like she was never there at all
And just like a great love affair
It didn't take too long
He fell down on his bended knees
And then he too was gone

Oh the river and the gum
O'vr years they became one
His roots ran deep into her soil
Her water fed his troubles and toil
There was no greater love
Under starry skies above
Forever they will bend and run
The river and the gum

Wooohhhh woooohhhhh

Oh the river and the gum
O'vr years they became one
His roots ran deep into her soil
Her water fed his troubles and toil
There was no greater love
Under starry skies above
Forever they will bend and run
The river and the gum
