Smoke on the Wind

I find myself in Trafalgar square
I stroke the lions that are lying there
And there's an old man, with fading eyes
I stop to talk to him, to his surprise
And he said he used to be a soldier
He killed for king and county, 1939
He has a scar where the medal was pinned
He told me glory was just, smoke on the wind

Smoke on the wind, it carried his friends away
Once a hero, but forgotten today
Smoke on the wind, getting older every year
And Mr Churchills promises, just disappeared

And as we walked he had stories to tell
He took me to a war memorial
He read the names there, of the friends he knew
But he cried for all of them, not just the few.
And he told me never go to war
Lay down your arms it's so much easier by far
Don't punish people that have never sinned
He told me glory was just, smoke on the wind

Smoke on the wind, it carried his friends away
Once a hero, but forgotten today
Smoke on the wind, getting older every year
And Mr Churchills promises, just disappeared

Smoke on the wind, it carried his friends away
Once a hero, but forgotten today
Smoke on the wind, getting older every year
And Mr Churchills promises just disappear
