Another night, another party
And it's all talk, small talk, words to burn
Then feel a presence in the room
I catch my breath, slowly I turn

And suddenly I'm wordless
Staring past your shoulder
Neither of us speaking
As the moment's growing colder
I'm looking at my shoe
Looking at the wall
Looking at the view
Looking anywhere at all

And so we're standing in the silence
And this second or two turns into a year
God won't you please say something
Or what if you did and I just didn't hear

And still I'm standing wordless
Staring past your shoulder
Neither of us talking
Just standing getting older
I'm looking at the floor
Looking at my drink
Looking out the door
Looking terrified, I think
'Cause if I dare to catch your eye
I might get swallowed up and die
Why doesn't somebody just say hi

There's no rational analysis
For this conversational paralysis
My vocal chords are getting calluses
As I try, I try, I try

But all I am is wordless
Staring at my fingers
Neither of us knowing
Why either of us lingers
I'm looking at the air
Looking at the ceiling
Looking at your hair
With the sinkingest of feelings
'Cause if I meet your eye
I might get swallowed up and die
