Gold Dust

Little by little you build yourself up
You start off by renting and accumulating
The myriad things that you need in your life
Like sockets and spanners and
Wardrobes and clothes hangers
Hoovers and dusters and
God knows what else and then
After a while you require some more certainty
Go for a mortgage and purchase a property
Fill it with all of the crap you've collected then
Look at the rooms that are still sort of empty
And wonder what else you require to be happy and

Life, well it's a funny old game
We're never content with things staying the same
So we look for a reason, we search for an answer
We're scared of our loneliness, want a companion and
Love seems to answer our calls
And new love is always the best love of all
A friend to rely on, a shoulder to cry on
A voice in the wilderness chasing the darkness away

And love can have consequence
Love can have side effects
The swelling of belly, the patter of little feet
See yourself somehow in somebody's features and
Fill up with love at the thought of the creatures
That you have helped bring to life
Brought to this world of strife
Suddenly time is an abstract construction
Your time and your house are filled up by their ructions
The smells and the screams and their
Delicious daydreams
Blink and they're gone, they're not
Staying here long
So just sleep baby sleep while I
Hold you and hold you and

Life, well it's a funny old game
Things change around us they can't stay the same
And we try to hang on to the things that we love
But it's like nailing jelly up, or
Trying to catch rainbows and
Love, changes too over time and
Love needs replenishment
Love needs some maintenance
Hoard it like Croesus but treat it like gold dust
And don't let the whirlwind blow
All of your gold dust away

Away
Away
Away
