Are You Alright

I saw him sitting with his head cupped and bowed
Despair on his shoulder eyes crying aloud
To the strangers waking by with their vacant stares
A coin might hit a pot with a "thank you, God bless"
Or a stranger might sneer and accuse him of something
So I sat down beside him and this is what I said to him...

Are you alright do you need a hand
Are you alright do you need a friend
Well I thought I found one in this bottle somewhere
But I've shaken it and emptied it and now its not there
So I'm not alright. And I'll never be alright again

The wine becomes bus fair in the patter he gives
And the bottle his home that he carries on his lips
And a lot of the strangers ignoring his pleas
Are like wasps at a picnic
So I sat at his feet and I said to him...

If anyone blames me for being a drunk
They can live like me for a week and see what they become
If anyone blames me for being a drunk
They can live like me for a week and see what they become

I've sat beside him for 4 long winters
I get the burger and he gets the whiskey
He is the master but I'm better fed
I'll never regret that day that I said to him...
