My Own Stages

The sun is screaming through the blinds
Refusing to be ignored
Dust illuminated when tree shadows dance along the floor
And I remember I'm alive
And make a promise not to waste it
So I breath deep and close my eyes
And wonder how it was before

I dream of Italian families
Clips from iconic movies
Salt from the Mediterranean sea
Dancing in the 1950's
Saying goodbye at the train station
Is it better in my imagination?

I stop myself before I go and get my personal assistant
Who has no feelings I should care for
And I can summon in a second
She sits there on the breakfast table
Mocking me just like the birds
Whispering "you cannot live without me"
That's what I heard

I dream of horses grazing the grass
Maybe the ghosts of a not so distant past
To spend my mornings in the library
The smell of books and English breakfast tea
Birds have wings
People have pages
I sing on my own stages
