The River

Born in the morning to a family of five
Play in her days, so happy alive
Her mother's hair smelled like flowers when wet
And the day started anew when the table was set
So many nights he was nowhere to be found
But she didn't mind because she hated the sound
Of that drunken voice so wild and deep
When the thunder would come she would wake up from her sleep.

The river flows by, it never asks why

The other kids seemed to have it all figured out
The teacher would nod when their homework came out
But she was distracted and not sure what was wrong
Home life was right and then it was wrong
The tests she could do because the math all made sense
School felt safe 'cause it was ringed by a fence
The days went along and she grew up like the rest
But wasn't sure what to do next, she would have confessed

The river flows by, it never asks why

She found him one day and her life took a turn
He loved her for reasons she never would learn
He wanted a family, a dog and a lawn
She cooked while he cleaned and their life moved along
The first house was small and had the first baby's cries
Then next had four kids and they all had her eyes
Never raised his voice he was willing to bend
And when the children were gone she still had him for a friend

The river flows by, it never asks why

Her life was so sweet though she had no real plan
Before him she was never too sure of a man
The letter arrived like junk mail or a bill
The kids came to see him the cancer to kill
The pastor he spoke and the people they cried
She stood by the grave as they drove back to their lives
Her mother's wet hair the sleepless nights when she tossed
The man of her dreams now the man she had lost

The river flows by, it never asks why

Nothing was left and it's always that way
You feel you can't face things the very next day
But she had children to love and they had more even still
And they came to her house at the top of the hill
She missed him, of course, though the river still flowed
And her life was so full that her face it still glowed
The calm of his voice was what she heard while in bed
The fears of her youth had no more place in her head

The water keeps flowing around your feet on a rock
It keeps time forever like a beautiful clock
The river it rises and then later it falls
Birds land on branches and let out beautiful calls
When life hits you hard and it feels like the end
The river's still flowing around the very next bend
So get up and keep walking if you're not sure where to go
Follow along the river knows where to flow

The river flows by, it never asks why
