Awaiting the Sun

Sand flows through the glass
Watch the morning traffic pass
With a coffee in my hand
Wondering where to begin
What's the meaning of life
If we all grow old and die
I tried living for the night
Yet it did not satisfy

Left along here in the dark
Questions linger on
Giving way to visions
Till the night is gone

As dreams come to an end
Push the pillow from my head
Rising before the sun
The workday has begun
Dress the part you're told to play
Wear the face they congratulate
In the end, the payoff is thin
Burning candle at each end

Where do we go from here,
How do I begin?
To explain all the questions;
The chaos in my head

Figured I should get way
Took a train northwest out of town
Spent my pennies in a row
Found none are meant to be alone
So I made a call back home
Wasn't sure you'd be around
I know I left you on a whim
But I need to come back home again

Said you'd send for me,
It won't be long
Here I am sitting with my bags
Awaiting the dawn

I'm told I think too much
Perhaps, I don't think enough
Since you mentioned it, I'm quite content
Asking questions in my head
I've never felt too alone before
Yet I'm empty deep inside
Awaiting the sun to rise and shine
Still waiting for the sun

But until then I will bid you;
Goodnight
