The Flood

I listened to the man on the Mississippi side
He swears he knows where we go when we die
He's worked a hundred years and he still ain't fit to die
Oh he's sitting back, he's waiting for the light

Said he'd seen the plains dry and dusty for the rains
Up and took his family to the muddy water
Kids were born and raised he watched the river flood the banks
And it took away his youngest daughter

The year of '69 he lost his wife to the vine
And the children died one by one
He said they're all gone, he's got 'em buried in the lawn
He said the next flood will take them on
