Me

I hear them fighting again
Going at each other's throats
And I can't escape the argument
Even when the closet door seemed closed

I hear voices in the dark
And the shuffling of feet
Someone here is dragging something across a desolate street

They think they do but they don't
No they think they can but they won't
Ever know

See them almost every day
And have the same conversations
So polite in a public space but in privacy it's only confrontations

I hear a scuffling around, I hear a young woman cry
Next day they drag the lake
And a divorced mother cries why

"How could I lose my only child?
How could they drag her down?"
Well dear you know she was lost
Long before now

I hear them fighting again
Tossing each other into the coals
Maybe it's how they keep the flames
Maybe they enjoy the bricks and the stones

I hear a diesel engine and some farm machinery
Who's digging a hole this late at night?
What could the reason be?

They think they do but they don't
No they think but they can but they won't
Ever know me
