Stillness

Most things I haven't even seen, while I know
It's the shaken man's way to never be keen
It's because I can obsess over yesterday's remains
Sifting through feeds and forgetting peoples names

Cold dry earth hides an unwanted gospel
That the lives we live are not like the novels
And that in searching for a place that feels intact
We forego a lot and dismiss our impact

Soft water showers feel like they might clean
Choices made that we don't really want seen
Fooling ourselves there's no need to do better
Coveting the fuel used in that endeavour

Polyester car-seat has sometimes held me weeping
One of the few places I feel safe when bleeding
There I like to think that dying builds character
Or at least that stillness of frame can be editor

We all hurt a little bit proving things to others
Or maybe proving things to ourselves while we wonder
We all hurt a little bit proving things to others
Or maybe proving things to ourselves while we wonder
