The Test

A split second decision, a lifetime left to regret
You'd better find some forgiveness, because you'll never forget

Each day a lesson, but the test was yesterday
One day I met a girl, she was my soul mate
Or so I thought at the time
The touch of her hand, a look in the eye
To have that kind of power should be a crime
I had to chase her halfway round the world
The days between seemed like they'd never end
She could not answer what I could not ask
I spent a year just trying to bottle the wind
Finally she was getting bare but "we shouldn't do this" she said
Between a moan and a sigh
I did the right thing, and years later she asked
About that day i'd turned her down - she'd always wondered why

Each day a lesson, but the test was yesterday
Still I'll be back in class tomorrow, another chapter on the way
I'm chewing more than I bit off, though I packed my own lunch box
I'm standing up to give my speech, dressed in just my socks
The dog chewed all my homework up, I've nothing left to say

I was working overtime to pay our bills

Then she destroyed my guitar
I hit the road hard but could not run far enough
She called to say that she was late and i should have a cigar

A neurotic nirvana, you float down the river all alone
When you know it doesn't get much better, i hope it's good enough
When you don't have all the cards you need, you just might have to bluff
