Vindobona
How you know Vienna today, is not the way it has been always
Long ago came a Celtic tribe, the Tribe of Boii
Came and contrived Castle hill Bratislava
But after military conflict
Another Celtic Kingdom called Noricum might have seized control
Then in 15 BC, the Romans came and annexed the land for their own
Under Emperor Augustus, in the first century AD
Remnants of the Celtic tribe and Germanic peoples allied
With Romans in what is now Vienna's third district
To allow the formation of newer place
Becoming a military base called Vindobona
Vindobona became a fortress when battles raged in northern forests
Called "Teutoburg," so Romans pulled back the borders to Vindobona
Where the land was elevated
Flat and open for to make some twenty hundred acres
Of a legionary fortress protected by the steep slope
Of Danube river on the north side of the edifice
Vindobona
How you know Vienna today, is not the way it has been always
How you know Vienna today, is not the way it has been always
Long ago under Roman rule, a settlement formed urban and rural
Closer to the base you'd find shops and taverns right in sight
Maybe even some place to work or recreation in the network
Farther from the center base
Larger villas in a country place adorned
Over the countryside where some civilians did abide
Vindobona, Vindobona, Vindobona
Vindobona's prosperity lasted about a century
From the middles of the second to the third century AD
Evidences from ceramics and garments suggest
That people from all over the Roman Empire came to live in Vindobona
How you know Vienna today is not the way it has been always
Long ago protecting the northern side of the Roman Empire
At it's peak Vindobona had thirty thousand people
And for about 350 years Romans occupied it's peers
Around 395 AD
The fortress caught fire and was destroyed
Though the regiment of soldiers rebuilt some
Vindobona was not as large as before
In 433 AD
The East-Roman Emperor, Theodosius The Second
Allowed the Huns to take over Vindobona
Vindobona
Vindobona, Vindobona, Vindobona, Vindobona
Vindobona, Vindobona, Vindobona, Vindobona
Vindobona, Vindobona, Vindobona
The Celts, Germanics and Romans and everyone in between
Then the Huns take the lead
How you know Vienna today is not the way it has been always
