This Road

I remember the day the county paved this road
I was just a kid and it was quite a show
I'd never seen such a big machine nearly every night
I'd dream about that asphalt ribbon rolling out of sight
Then one day my dad said "Son, take this wheel"
"Feel the power of this highway 'neath an automobile"
I pulled out on the blacktop, fumbled into third
He put his hand upon my shoulder, softly said these words
"Son, this road is your freedom, the highway to your dreams"
"Remember where it came from, no matter where it leads"
"Anytime you're out there feeling all alone"
"This road that you leave on, can always bring you home"
Looking back, the years and miles have both been kind
I love the life I live, but now and then I find
There's a hunger in my soul in a place i need to be
I think about my dad and the words he said to me
"Son, this road is your freedom, the highway to your dreams"
"Remember where it came from no matter where it leads"
"Anytime you're out there feeling all alone"
"This road that you leave on, is the road that brings you home"
"This road that you leave on, can always bring you home"
