Underwater
Once I lived underwater
Do you know what I mean?
Underwater's what I call
The deep dark world of dreams
Life was very good there
But I was all alone
A solitary swimmer
In that eerie, ethereal zone
I always had something to look at
Wide eyes, inspired mind
But no one else could see these things
They knew a different meaning of time
They lived above the surface
There they soaked up sun
And talked amongst each other
About things other people had done
They could barely see me
Gliding beneath the waves
To them this magnificent ocean
Was just another kind of grave
They loved to hear my stories
When I would rise to the surface and speak
And they never gave anything in return
Though I must have looked quite pale and weak
All I ate were sapphire fish
Their flesh was soft and pure
I followed them to shallow waters
Where I was washed up on the shore
The people there were kind to me
They gave me fresh fruit and wine
Taught me how to sail a ship
How to read the midnight sky
My stories were not much to them
Not allegories or moral tales
Did not always have happy endings
Where good character prevailed
Instead I spoke of stranger things
They did not understand
So they told me to take the ship I'd built
And sail to another land
But when I got there, I'd lost my stories
And I couldn't go back under the sea
I'd lost my ability to dive so deep
And resist the urge to breathe
So now I am a boat builder
Soaking up the sun
But people still don't understand me
To them I am no one
I spend all my free hours
Staring at the sea
Trying to recall those amazing sights
That brought so much joy to me
Do you know what I mean?
Underwater's what I call
The deep dark world of dreams
Life was very good there
But I was all alone
A solitary swimmer
In that eerie, ethereal zone
I always had something to look at
Wide eyes, inspired mind
But no one else could see these things
