Afraid of the Dark

As the year becomes older our hearts become colder
The days are getting so dark
The cold seeps in stronger as magic surrenders
To everyday sensible thoughts

So you bottle it up and put it in a shop
But it doesn't feel real anymore
The lights are turned on and the trees standing tall
But it's not something you can afford

In 32 years you accumulate so many things
That you don't really need
Still December comes round and you still tell your family
"Surprise me. Surprise me!"

But if Santa Clause doesn't exist
Then it's up to us to make Christmas happen
So suspend disbelief as we take turns to creep
Round the rooms and fill up the stockings

And if Santa Clause doesn't exist
Then it's not the reindeer and presents that matter
We'll string up the lights and we'll bake our mince pies
And sing carols, whatever the weather

We used to hope for snow every Christmas
We're praying it won't flood this year
As the year becomes colder, our hearts getting older
We're missing the ones who aren't here

Families grow bigger and farther apart
And we gather, but it's not the same
New traditions could be for the better
But I need time to get used to this feeling of change

It's cold outside, baby, it's cold outside
It's cold outside
A new heart is beating and we'll soon be meeting them

Cold outside, baby, it's cold outside
It's cold outside
Born in the winter, it only gets brighter

It's cold outside, baby, it's cold outside
Baby, it's cold outside
Don't be afraid of the dark

Everyone's gathering in anticipation
Of what this new life will bring
The days getting longer and warmer and brighter
The world's filled with magical things

And though we all scatter and everyday living
Distracts us and keeps us apart
A new spark is burning.
A new heart is beating
So don't be afraid of the dark
