Memo

This morning, as I stepped out from our room
I was taken by a peculiar gloom
I breathed in the supreme air
It was toxic without you there
So I write to you in the dusk
Thinking while you sleep of your suspicious new musk
Wondering how the king of a republic
Can be held up by your words like bricks

I know you still want to be my friend
Why else would you so strongly seek to offend?
You fix the flag when it is torn
But it was in shreds before we were born

I've dreamt for these six months of home
And the river by which we roamed
And laid down all the thoughts that we carried
Years before we were ever married
And I dreamt that you clutched a wine glass
And plucked the beard straight from my face
And the parlour was populated then
With every member of the human race

I know you still want to be my friend
Why else would you so strongly seek to offend?
You fix the flag when it is torn
But it was in shreds before we were born
