Rusticated

Rain settles on the rusticated stone
Wind echoes through the gates along the street
Climbs the bank, filling space that used to be a home
And spares itself with grace, accepts defeat
I recall the voices of a family once here
Rationing for whatever they can find
With reddened eyes, sleep deprived, the end is near
Frantic running from what's left behind
But I recall the dress she wore that night
Muted colors run along the hemline
But red seems to overwhelm in this light
Surely that amount can't only be mine
Blood settles on the rusticated stone
All I need right now is to be left alone
