King and Marie

A little boy and a little girl met on the playground
He fell in love straight away
He asked her her name, she said "My name it is Marie"
He said "My name is King and I will give you everything
If you will give me your tomorrows"

Come with me Marie I'll build you a castle out of mud
Follow me Marie to the valley
Come with me Marie I'll build you a castle out of mud
Marie will you be my queen?

They bought a farm in California their first married year
Then King was called off to war
He wrote her letters every night and his only fear
Was that he wouldn't see her anymore

Then the war was over, he finally came home
And he took Marie into his arms
But the Great Depression came and took their land away
They moved down to Texas when times were hard

Come with me Marie I'll build you a castle out of mud
Follow me Marie to the valley
Come with me Marie I'll build you a castle out of mud
Marie will you stay by my side?

They settled in near the Rio Grande
In a desert valley full of old mesquites
Some of Pancho Villa's army helped them to clear the land
They planted fields of cotton and started a family

She gave him seven boys under the Texas sun
And the summers came, and the gardens bloomed
And their hair turned grey as the years went on
And the grandkids would kiss her cheek too

Come watch me grow younger Marie
Send me to my own room
Pull the clay blanket up over my head
A kingdom's patience alone in my bed
Hurry love, waltz to me, lay by my side
Here in the alkali dust
A king and his bride
Here in the alkali dust
A king and his bride

Come with me Marie I'll build you a castle out of mud
Follow me Marie to the valley
The girl with the jar of Abraham stars
Marie will you be my queen?
Marie will you be my queen?
