Phantom Pain

You know what's like
You've been there too
It's like you miss a leg
Or even two

You get up from your bed
Feeling pain
You need some kind of pill
And it goes away

You get on with your life
Feeling okay
Until the pills wear off
And comes the pain

The days go by
Rinse and repeat
And as the time goes on
Something changes
You start to feel better
You enjoy your day
It seems almost like you made it
Go away

Then it comes the day
You feel quite sure
You need no pills today
It's going to be great

Before you realize
You lie on the floor
Screaming in agony
Like you just broke

You reach for your pills
You take a few
The terror in your eyes
Why you?

Remember, it's not you
It's everyone in the world
With all the people we've known
Every day we're alone
Feeling disappointment
Like cold rain pouring down
Staring at the desert
Where you though there was a town

That's the way, my friend
It turns out in the end
Scars never go away
On your skin, they will stay
And when you get old
You'll find out it still hurts
The only thing you can pray
Is for the pain to decay
