Birthday Cards

Well I drank up my paycheck
And I went stumbling towards the car
I put my key in the ignition
And I prayed it wouldn't start
Well my pillbox heart was trembling
Yeah my neon eyes they burned
And I sat staring at the paper
But I could not find the words

I didn't take good care
Of all the things I said I would
I got lost in space camp daydreams
Probably think more than I should
And I'm late to every dinner
First to leave from every dance
I think I'm running out of reasons
To deserve another chance

Nothing makes you miss old things like new ones
Nothing makes you feel so fully grown
Than when you're lying on your back
In the room you grew up in
With your birthday cards all scattered on the floor
