Black Walnut Tree

Up in the morning, I can't close my eyes
There's no sun in my window but still, it's too bright
Pull the sheets over my head but I still can't hide
So I beg to the shade: smother all light inside

I'll never be free, living life in the shade of my black walnut tree

Though I try to stay patient and burn through the day
Feel my stomach grow lighter, hands and knees start to quake
Nod off at dinner, live my life half-awake
Never quite knew what soul was, guess I've got none to break

I'll be damned if I think that I'll ever be free
Passing slow in the shade of my black walnut tree
