In the North

Glacier sounds, miles away
and waterfalls abound
breaking twigs, cones of Oregon pines
falling to the ground
Glacier hounds, a solitary snow fox
peeking from the shrubbery
snow squalls dying down
the crest is aglow
Glacier mounds, a grizzly bear grunts in heat
weasels hurry-scurry down
sloping to the mossy ground
in hiding
The mountain groans, gives way
with the first rays of dawn
the melting snow breaks asunder
coasts down in a murderous frenzy
takes everything and everyone
and buries them alive
Glacier lake, the ice sheet thick and blear
locked up fishes in the deep
the ptarmigan is eating seeds, digging, sleeping underneath
a blanket of snow
The sly racoon beats everything
douses nuts in glacial streams
borrows someone else's hole for a kip
The mountain groans, gives way
with the first rays of dawn
the melting snow breaks asunder
coasts down in a murderous frenzy
takes everything and everyone
and buries them alive
