See Through the Day

I look at the empty night without you near
Camped out at Charing Cross to spite my fear
The streetlights have yet to go out
I'm wrapped in my favorite doubts
And since yesterday's covered with clouds, I can't say I miss it
I turn to my left and I see Old Joe in the Louvre
I knew him so well back in school when he lent me his shoes
We made such mistakes in those days
Caught up in some indigo haze
Distracted by theaters and plays that sounded explicit
And since you're not here to complain I guess I can say
That I think I would rather go blind than see through the day

I beat on a Sunday drum with Saturday's friends
Waiting for Tuesday's train to fall in the Thames
But nothing like that should occur
The city feels very assured
And Shakespeare has even been heard read out by their voices
The ragtime band 'cross the Seine is playing for tips
Their music can't quite reach your ears, but it stays on your lips
It leaves you indifferent and cold
You weren't always like this, you know
You once had a virtuous soul, but then came your choices
It's been a long time since you cared, so I'm not afraid
To say that I'd rather go blind than see though the day

The morning is breaking so quiet we're not sure it came
Trafalgar is bathed in a glow that the Gallery frames
The Rembrandts inside look like June
Hieronymus Bosch drops his spoon
While Holbein and Turner sing tunes they picked up from Gershwin
I sit all alone in the pews of old Notre Dame
I'll stay here for most of the day reciting the psalms
But you interrupt with a smile
You ask me to talk for a while
I laugh cause I'm just so beguiled, you act like a virgin
You turn away weeping with guilt, but I've got the blame
But I'd rather take that and go blind than see through the day
