Stars

I'm running through a field with my mother
I'm just a baby and I'm running through the tall grass
And I'm picking blueberries
Watching the sky even out
Hearing the birds go chirp chirp
And the fireflies go bzz bzz
I'm just the happiest I ever was
I used to didn't wanna grow older
What are ya gonna be when you grow up?
I wanna pick berries in the field
I wanna play in the field and climb the trees
Never really had any friends around
All the other kids just stayed inside
Newspaper man said, "We're living in a one horse town"
I thought, "That must be a lonely life"
I got a job at the factory
Putting things inside of the boxes
Until the boxes are full up and they go away forever
I just can't wait for the sun to set
So I can go outside and go back to the field
Sometimes I... I wish it was dark forever
And I could hide under the trees
See the stars come out
Glow in the dark stars
Like in my bedroom at night
Monsters couldn't give me a fright
I wanna stay out and play
But they always find me and bring me back
They said, "A field's no place for a baby like you"
I said, "Wasn't everything just fields to begin with?"
Daddy lost his job when the mill closed
Now I'm all grown up
And I'm back in the field
And I'm with her and her and him and them
This time, mama stayed home
Legs feel heavy like a stone
Sometimes I feel so happy that I could explode
I can see the stars in the field
I'm holding hands with everyone I ever did meet
Did you ever hear a sound that felt like air?
That you could feel but couldn't see
The branches and the leaves look like fingers on the trees
We started dancing by the stream
Lights and beams in the sky was blue and green
Prettier than you could ever believe
Somebody just said it was gettin' late
I don't ever wanna leave
Please don't make me leave
Dawn comin' up like a mack truck down the highway
Underside of the sky lookin' periwinkle
People keep on walking away
But I'm still in the field
Chewing on a blueberry
Hoping the sun gets shy
And goes right on back down again
