Deliver Us from Evil (To Sin Again)

The people wait in trepidation
TV warnings alarm the nation
Politicians try to calm us down
As panic spreads from town to town
With soothing words: "everything's ok"
But the sweat on their foreheads gives the game away
Outside on the street people hurry past
All afraid their next moment might be their last
Mother calls children into the house
Looking furtively skyward like a frightened mouse
For the telltale vapour trails across the sky
That mean any minute now we're all gonna die
And the siren starts to wail, drowning out the screams
Wailing a lament for all our shattered dreams
For someone's pushed the button and there's no turning back
But looking forward's no good either 'cause the future's looking black

You ask them, "why did you go and do that?"
But you shouldn't look so surprised
Man has bitten the apple, killed the saints, spat on the saviour
Why shouldn't he press the button too?

And you all cry out, "Save us lord, save us lord
"Deliver us from evil! Save us lord, save us lord
"Then leave us alone to sin again"

With the trumpet calls ringing loud in every ear
The sirens up above all sing the end is near
Blood, hail and fire fall across the land
And people cry to god 'cause they don't understand
Beneath your feet the grass starts to burn
But still you don't repent, still you don't turn
Your conscience drowns in an ocean of blood
Why are you proud even now? Your name's covered in mud
Fallout in your water fall out in your streams
Bitterness contaminating all of your dreams
Filth in the sky blotting out the stars
Grey clouds shortening the daylight hours
And the people all cry, "God, where are you now?"
They want to make it right again but they don't know how
But jesus never promised them they'd be ok
If they just kept right on sinning and pushing him away
