Jealous God

When Israel heard the fiery law
On Sinai's mount proclaimed
Their hearts seemed full of holy awe
Their stubborn spirits tamed
Yet as forsaking all they knew
'Ere forty days were passed
With blazing Sinai still in view
A golden calf they cast

And Aaron, God's anointed priest
Who on the mount had been
Prepared that shameful idol-beast
And them led on to sin
Lord, what is man, and what are we
To recompense Thee thus?
In their offense our own we see
Their story points to us

The Lord our God is a Jealous God
He will not share His glory
He will not share His throne
The Lord our God is the One true God
We give You all the glory
We worship You alone

From Sinai we have heard Thee speak
And from mount Cal'vry, too
And yet to idols oft' we seek
When Thou art in our view
Some golden calf, some golden dream
Some fancied creature good
Presumes to share the heart with Him
Who bought the whole with blood

The Lord our God is a Jealous God
He will not share His glory
He will not share His throne
The Lord our God is the One true God
We give You all the glory
We worship You alone

Some golden calf, some golden dream
Some fancied creature good
Presumes to share the heart with Him
Who bought the whole with blood

The Lord our God is a Jealous God
He will not share His glory
He will not share His throne
The Lord our God is the One true God
We give You all the glory
We worship You alone
