The Child

Many nights I see you there
Alone in the dark, you cry no tear
Thinking of that long ago, you try not to let show
I don't know what I can say to make the pains all go away
In the darkest of the hours, the child cries out again

Butterflies and summer dreams
A mother's touch and childhood friends
If they're all taken away, how can you go on then
But I know that we will try, until we fall down in surprise
And even then we'll try to stand, and find that we still can

Some of us will take our chance
To make our worlds alright again
Even though the pain's still there
It's no worse than before
Some of us have lost our faith
And turn to the dark to hide our faces
Even though the child is gone

Is there a point to go on still
Give so much and get so few, is there a reason too
I know they have hurt us deep, so deep the wounds they still do bleed
But if we don't try to live, we let them hurt us again
