A Distant Dream

When I was in kindergarten
I got my first wrong problem
Red ink on the white page
Wet tears run down my face

Alone in darkness
All of the kids were at recess
Ms. Parsons came in
Stooped down by my side
And she said

You're not a failure
And you're not stupid
You are a cool kid
I know you, you can do this

Moved back to my home town
I'm so much older now
Car just got repo'd
I guess I'm goin down that road
Applying for a job
At an automated kiosk
I'm gonna stock groceries
I hope that no one sees

That I'm a failure
Yeah I'm a loser
I'm not a cool kid
I don't think I can do this
If I stop dreaming
Then I'll start dying
And I might never win again
But God knows I won't stop trying

Somewhere in my mind
There's a distant dream
And I cannot seem to shake
The hope inside of me
Oh this hope inside of me
No I cannot let it be
Somewhere in my mind
There's a distant dream

What if I never win
What if this is all there is
Lying on my death bed
Only friend is regret
They say the failures
Precede every victory
But if there's a winner
The failure of others is necessary

Am I deluded
Should my dreams be uprooted
Should I stop
Should I get a real job

Somewhere in my mind
There's a distant dream

Somewhere in my mind
There's a distant dream

Shouldn't complain
How kids want to be older
I wanted to be older
Wanted to be older
And so I cannot complain
Cuz I want to be younger
I want to be younger
I want to be young again

What is a failure
What is a loser
And what is coolness
I know you, you can do this
If you stop dreaming
Then you'll start dying
And we might never win again
But God knows we won't stop trying

Somewhere in my mind
There's a distant dream
And I cannot seem to shake
The hope inside of me
Oh this hope inside of me
No I cannot let it be
Somewhere in my mind
There's a distant dream

Shouldn't complain
How kids want to be older
I wanted to be older
Wanted to be older
And so I cannot complain
Cuz I want to be younger
I want to be younger
I want to be young

Forever
