A Dark Day In September

It was a dark day in September
When Aylan washed up on that beach
A wake up call I still remember
To try and offer some relief
Collecting sleeping bags and blankets
Tents clothing and food aid
As autumn temperatures were dropping
I drove my motor to Calais

And then you end up in the Jungle
With 10,000 refugees
And then you end up in the Jungle

Dire conditions in the Jungle
Neglected by both governments
It makes you put things in perspective
Making me ever more determined
No major aid organisations
No previous experience
A total grassroots operation
Thrown straight in the deep end

The best and worst place altogether
A place of happiness and pain
A place of cheese bread and CS gas
Sunshine snow and flooding rains
A place that stays with you forever
A place of hope and hopelessness
Of deepest darkest desperation
Of new life and fucking death

And then you end up in the Jungle
With 10,000 refugees
And then you end up in the Jungle
Shanty town communities
And then you end up in the Jungle
Daily assaults by French police
And then you end up in the Jungle
