The Whole of Ireland & the Irish Sea

I stole all the crystal out of Waterford, the sunny South East chased me like a beast
Cut out my drying heart, rubbed it in clove oil and wrapped it up in oak bark
It was yours by Borris-in-Ossory

Followed the vine all the way to the melon, I was a career crook never a felon
21 Miles to Portlaoise and a sweetheart there that might have harboured me
Instead we took the short, short way through Tipperary

I'd have given you the whole of Ireland
I'd have thrown in the Irish Sea
More the fool to think that giving someone an island
Could make them feel anything but lonely

You'd grown weary and us just passed Cahir, mostly tired of my dishonesty
I still hear your desperate screams, "I want to be with you I just don't need to be"
From then on, I was a dead dog among the reeds

We knelt at odd shaped rocks to pray, for some kind of sign to help us believe
Stopped by at Ballinspittle to see a moving statue of the blessed virgin Mary
Was I conning her, or was she iconning me?

I'd have given you the whole of Ireland
I'd have thrown in the Irish Sea
More the fool to think that giving someone an island
Could make them feel anything but lonely

Lonely are you, waiting on me to change
Lonely are we, racing to our graves

Last thing I felt was the impact, last thing I saw were the backs of your heels
The distant howls and figures left me no doubt it was you who'd pulled that trigger
And in that I took some solace and relief

I rolled over to face the blue sky, closed my eyes and dreamt that you'd got away
I watch as you crossed the sea, well if you wanted to go i'd have let you leave
But we choose love, or we choose to be free

You never needed the whole of Ireland
You never wanted the Irish Sea
More the fool to think that giving someone an island
Could make them feel anything but lonely
