No One

THE OLD MAN

He sat there motionless squinting against the sun
An old and bearded man, wrinkles adorned his face.
He lived from fishing, he mastered that old trade.
He had nothing but his boat
No friends, no one.

He was dependent on wind and water,
On moon and sun.
He knew all the stars and all the voices
Of the birds.
He lived far away from the old town
Under the open sky.

He prayed all evening that God might save his boat
Thanked for being given the riches of the sea.
Grandad once taught him a few fisherman-songs.
No one can ever take
His songs away.

(Fisherman-melodies)

One night, the conditions seemed to be ideal.
And as custom had it he sailed to cast the nets.
He didn't return but no one cared
He had nothing but his boat
No friends, no one.

Now, seagulls circling over him
Are wailing his old songs.
(Melody)
No one can ever take
Their songs away.

No one can ever take
Their songs away.
No one can ever take
Their songs away.
He had nothing but his boat
No friends, no one.
