Pantheon

Steadier, I thought I was steadier
'Til life came 'round
And pulled the off-red carpet from my feet
Still I thought I was readier
To face the truth
That everything now dull once had a gleam

I stumbled
Out the door and hit the floor
And broke my nose on what I thought I knew
So I philosophized about the endgame
Brutish old world shoved against the new

Yours is gravity
To wander in your sleep
In the belly of the beast
To wonder where went the floor
It fell away

Turns out culture got it wrong
The liquid crystal dreams were too naïve
Still they flipped the switch the other way
Romanticized the puncture of the dream

Promises now seem worth no less or more
Than any spoken word
No matter who they said they were and I'm sure
The pantheon grows thinner by the age
The young linger with the dead

Yours is gravity
To wander in your sleep
In the belly of the beast
To wonder where went the floor
It fell away
