He Was Eight

He was eight and I was ten
Now I'm never going to see him again

I watched as he cowered under blows raining down
Knowing I'd be next if I stayed around
Father's hate and anger wrecked him
And I could not protect him

And every day of my life since then
I've tried to make some sense of it
It just keeps going around in my head
Maybe I should have taken those blows instead

He was eight and I was ten
Now I'm never going to see him again

The agony he lived through
The innocent happy child who
Could have had a life of joy and meaning
But instead found his world careening
Into pain and sadness only he could know

He was eight and I was ten
Now I'm never going to see him again

And as his body wasted away
He prayed for deliverance every day
I choose to believe
He's gone to a better place

You were eight years old
My dear sweet brother
Forgive me there was nothing I could do
To help you, I love you
