Shallow Dreams

I don't need money to feed the hunger in my brain
My body is just water, I feel only feeble pain
The mountain looks enormous towering over my domain
But I'll climb it with my shoes untied through darkness, snow or rain
What loneliness keeps withering, hope just reinflates
I'm bound fast to the dreams cast in the silt of my riverbanks
That with each high tide erodes a little further at the base
So I'd better slip the noose and let the torrent guide my way

Down the river, to the sea
Let the current carry me
Far away from shallow dreams
To the deep, blue mystery

Fear can be a fortress protecting those within
Who'll never let the fortifying sunlight touch their skin
Pallid and impaired and thirsty for melatonin
Their fates bemoaned, they'll die alone without virtue, without sin
I've had a thousand losses for every time I win
I've met a thousand strangers to find the few I call my friends
I've worked a thousand hours for one weekend
I'm a scavenger for beauty at the bottom of the bin

Down the river, to the sea
Let the current carry me
Far away from shallow dreams
To the deep, blue mystery
