San Miguel

Left the house at midnight
Just a shirt upon my back
I walked a hundred moonlit miles,
to where the ghost slept 'neath the tracks
I woke him for directions
He just looked down at my shoes
I hit the city barefoot
Not a penny left to lose

I slept all through the morning,
soothed by the city's song
The mean machines and the magazines
and the movers shook along
I met a girl out on the road,
and she took care of me
You know that love in transit, it don't fade so gracefully

In the hills outside of San Miguel tonight
Lord, it was the first time that I prayed
Though the road leading home is paved with gold
Don't you know I'm wishing that I'd stayed

300 miles up the 101
There's ocean behind me and desert in front
You know I admire
How careful you dismiss
You're something I desire
You're something I miss

In the hills outside of San Miguel tonight
Lord, it was the first time that I prayed
Though the road leading home is paved with gold
Don't you know I'm wishing that I'd stayed

In the hills outside of San Miguel tonight
I swore I saw my shadow disappear
Though the road leading home is beautiful I'm told
These days it just feels so unclear
