Plenty Well

I envy bad the woods from
Within which flows the stream
That the old folks say they used
To draw their water from
Didn't taste the same as others
But one they'd grown to love
And the yearnin for what it held
Was a thirsty one

I remember my granddaddy
Harped till the day he died
Said the world ain't no count no more
Since plenty well ran dry
They don't care no more for knowing
Just for staying occupied
But I recon that's the reason it ran dry

Folks around got talking
They put a paved road in
That led around the old woods
That was something way back then
A new well had been dug
But the waters not the same
And that wooded path we'd worn
No longer pointed towards the way

He said they drink their water
But it won't do them no good
It kills the thirst for now
But not like ours would
Before too long I recon
That new wells gonna show
Then boy where you think their gonna go

Plenty Well they called it
That sticks with me the most
It makes a lot more sense
Once you break his dusty code
It took some years to see it
And it's more true now to me
That though the well be new
Don't always mean the waters clean

I remember my granddaddy
Harped till the day he died
Said the world ain't no count no more
Since plenty well ran dry
They don't care no more for knowing
Just for staying occupied
But I recon that's the reason it ran dry
