The Day They Shot Down Bonnie and Clyde

Momma said this day would surely come
She said those two could hide and they could run
But the things they did could never be undone
She knew their days would end with the sound of a gun

Most folks know the story of Bonnie and Clyde
As two young kids in love on a wild ride
Now for a minute put all that you know aside
And I'll tell you a tale I saw with my own two eyes

The day they shot down Bonnie and Clyde I watched my momma cry
The day they shot down Bonnie and Clyde I saw death with my own eyes
The devil rode in a Ford V8 to a reckoning on that day
The life I knew would never be the same

A muggy May night turned into a muggy May day
Frank Hamer and his handpicked lawmen in ambush lay
Old man Methvin said the two would come this way
So they jacked up his truck just so they'd stop and stay

Barefoot Clyde doing 85 around that bend
At the top of the hill he slowed when he saw his friend
Bonnie and Clyde stopped by just to lend a hand
Hell and brimstone commenced, Clyde and Bonnie met their end

The day they shot down Bonnie and Clyde I watched my momma cry
The day they shot down Bonnie and Clyde I saw death with my own eyes
The devil rode in a Ford V8 to a reckoning on that day
The life I knew would never be the same

The gunsmoke cleared to reveal the awful scene
Word spread fast, the crowd that grew turned real mean
They tore and cut them, tried to pick them clean
So the law towed it all away just to intervene

In my fifth grade classroom on that day
When the law with the car in tow stopped out front to say
Take a good look kids, death will come your way
When you break the law or forget to pray

The day they shot down Bonnie and Clyde I watched my momma cry
Oh Lordy now
The day they shot down Bonnie and Clyde I saw death with my own eyes
Good Heavens child
The devil rode in a Ford V8 to a reckoning on that day
The life I knew would never be the same

I saw that car and I won't tell you no lie
My heart ran cold as ice when I looked inside
In death they were close, Bonnie leaned on Clyde
Their young lives were gone, but their eyes stared wide

Bonnie asked to be buried next to Clyde
But her momma said no, not upon her life
So the last time they were ever side by side
Was in that car on the day they died

The day they shot down Bonnie and Clyde I watched my momma cry
Oh Lordy now
The day they shot down Bonnie and Clyde I saw death with my own eyes
Good Heavens child
The devil rode in a Ford V8 to a reckoning on that day
The life I knew would never be the same
May they rest in peace
