Civil Cynic

He's going to screw us over again
I don't believe anything he says
His intentions they don't matter
All that gold on a silver platter

So politely we must decline
Don't take it wrong you may be fine
It's just that I'm a bit of a cynic

Sometimes it just doesn't seem fair
I see happy people everywhere
Why aren't they like me, in despair?
Going through life without a care

To that easy place I shall resign
Where being right is the greatest prize
And the king of the land is a cynic

All of my life I've fought it
Why did God have to make me a cynic
Isn't life hard enough as it is?
Even though the cup's half full
It's the empty part that keeps on pushing through
So why do I keep coming back for more?

Why should I try when I lose every time?
Play by the rules and get charged with a crime
Why go on living just to be old and stricken?
I never even bother counting my chickens

So take comfort in that certain pride
Of living a life that was never tried
It's always really safe being a cynic
