Camphor

I am a wide-eyed girl
Scared of the dark but not yet of the world
Came here in the back of a van
Me and my sister eating candy from our sweaty hands
And this house shivers in the night
But daddy says the camphor tree protects us and we'll be alright
It stands one thousand feet tall
If I climb to the top can I see mama in the hospital

I have no fear

I am the purest uncorrupted joy
I'm taking this corn with me to visit my mother
She says she'll get better and she never lies

I met a spirit today
Fell asleep beside him when I woke he'd gone away
And I want my sister to see
That we can be protected and all we have to do is believe
Waiting for a bus in the rain
Hanging on my sister like a drifter on a nighttime train
She meets the spirit too
Shares her umbrella because what else are friends supposed to do

I went missing today
They found my shoe floating down by the lake
My sister searched and cried
Ripples on the surface
Am I on the other side?
Sat by the side of the road
Satsuki finds me cried out and all alone
But a friend comes to give us a ride
We leave the corn by mama's window so she knows that we're on her side
