Heart of the Home

That old Woodsman woodstove brought us together
Made of cast iron with the draft knobs on the front
Coaxing the fire with newspaper and kindling sticks
We'd crowd around for just a speck of warmth

My brothers were meant to keep the woodbox full
But some days it was just so cold
I can hear my father getting up to do the job
And them scampering out to try and beat him to it.

The heart of the home
And the warmth of my soul
I loved you guys
I loved you guys

Cold Spring days we made maple syrup
From maple trees we tapped outside the house
Boiled down on the stove till it got to 50 to 1
I can almost taste the sweetness in my mouth

And how the dog managed to fit underneath the stove
That tiny bit of room without being burned
I can see my mother sweeping up bits of bark and twigs
Spiders and things trying to avoid her broom

That old Woodsman woodstove brought us together
I'm not sure how it is now we find ourselves so apart
