I Don't Pick the Music

I met an old man
At a local burn out bar, he was
Nursing a whiskey
And smoking a long cigar

He told me his wife cheated
Left and broke his heart
And now he drinks at night
To keep out all the dark

I asked him
How do you make it through the day?
What keeps you going now that she has gone away?
He closed his eyes a second
Tilted his head
Told me something I don't think I'll
Ever forget

He said
I don't pick the music
I just dance
Sometimes all that you can do
Is do all that you can

Often times I wonder
It's all part of the plan
But I don't pick the music
I just dance
No I don't pick the music
I just dance

Bartender told me that
She's sick of pouring beers
She's worked here every day
For twenty five long years

She used to dream she'd have a
Big acting career
But she just never made it out of here

I asked her
How do you make it through the day?
What keeps you going since the dream has gone away?
She said the best advice that
She had ever heard
Was from the old man sitting next to me
So listen to listen to his words

Oh, he said
I don't pick the music
I just dance
Sometimes all that you can do
Is do all that you can

Often times I wonder
Is it all part of the plan
But I don't pick the music
I just dance
No I don't pick the music
I just dance

So when I don't really know who's in control or what the hell is goin on
I can always find some comfort in the fact that
I am not the only one
We're confused and lost and lonely and
We don't know what do
But we're on this ride together, so here's to you

I don't pick the music
I just dance
Sometimes all that you can do
Is do all that you can

Often times I wonder
Is it all part of the plan
But I don't pick the music
I just dance
No I don't pick the music
