Road to Jericho

I could tell my arm was broken
As I woke up in a fog
I couldn't find my wallet
And my ring and watch were gone

My nose was sore and bloodied
My breath was short and pained
My clothes were torn and tattered
That is the ones that still remained

I am alone and helpless
And like that man from long ago
I am a lonely traveler down the road to Jericho

Beaten by a gang of thieves
Robbed and stripped of pride
My dignity has vanished
But at least I'm still alive

A limousine drives past me
A smartphone flashes in my face
Their laughter piles on insult
As I lie in my disgrace

I am alone and helpless
And like that man from long ago
I am a lonely traveler down the road to Jericho

Then shadow stands above me
And He asks if I'm hurt
His face is dark as swarthy
And his hands were caked with dirt
And I contemplate and ponder
If it was him hurt on the ground
Would I stop and give him comfort?
Or would I just keep walking on

As I revel in the mercy
From an unexpected place
What a blessing to gain refuge
In this surprising brush with grace

Though it me feel uneasy
I have reasons to believe
We won't recognize our savior
If we don't like what we see

I am alone and helpless
And like that man from long ago
I am a lonely traveler down the road to Jericho
I am a lonely traveler down the road to Jericho
