I peered so steadily into the torrent of the storm
The things I saw there, I can't conceive
All the pain and all the sadness
All the fear and all the madness
Tell me how is this what we've come to be?

So stand there in innocence
And ignorance be damned
It'd be so easy just to let you fall
To turn around and walk away
To watch you as you try in vain
Nevermore to be your guiding star

Sometimes you're left up on the high road
Sometimes you're left up there alone

Not even gods nor emperors
Can know this pain that comes from honest sanctity
But when the sand and dust
Have finally settled down

I've often wondered if it's worth all of this
Or have I condemned myself to misery?
When I've sacrificed my selfish whims
Only to be tossed aside again
Who is left to give of themselves for me?

Sometimes they leave you on the high road
With just your thoughts for company
