Western Gate

I was walking down an old familiar road
When I caught you in the corner of my eye
I watched you slip into the wilderness unknown
And I couldn't pass you by

I broke a trail, broke some branches, tore my clothes
Scratched and bruised along the way
I heard you singing in the pale alpenglow
Just beyond the western gate

I thought I'd lost you when I found myself alone
Without a compass or a map
Walking in circles far from anything I've known
Without a road to get me back
And I cried out "how could you leave me here alone
I followed you into the dark"
I tried to find you where I'd lost you long ago
But I was looking way too hard

I thought I'd passed you by in my hurry
I'd lost my way
I thought I heard you say
"Don't you waste your life to worry, don't worry"

I found a marker on a trail old and scarred
It read "All roads lead to Rome
Wherever you may travel, baby there you are
So you can take the long way home"
