Swim

I took an oath to my conscience years ago that I wouldn't get in over my head again
And I wrote a note to myself that said
Don't you dare go anywhere until you learn to swim
But here I am, who knows how far from dry land
I'm getting weak and I can't breathe
If I don't wake up in the sand
Then I guess Poseidon caught me and I'll have to shake his hand
Because he warned me not to test him until I had learned to swim
When I learned to float I went as far as
I could go until the currents started pulling me in
And I found myself alone countless miles away from home
With no one in sight I knew that I was on my own
But here I am, who knows how far from dry land
I'm getting weak and I can't breathe
If I don't wake up in the sand
Then I guess Poseidon caught me and I'll have to shake his hand
Because he warned me not to test him until I had learned to swim
So here I am, so many years later
And I don't understand how I've gotten myself lost at sea again
Well, maybe I just haven't learned my lesson yet
And it'd be easier just to forget
And let the waves take me and turn me into sand
